So there’s a few reason why you might want to think about partnering with a Vanguard advisor.

One, our advisors don’t have a conflict of interest. They’re salaried so they don’t get paid any extra compensation or incentives to recommend our products and services to you.

They can actually leverage technology to build your plan in a very efficient and effective manner which allows them to spend most of their time getting to know you, getting to understand your goals, and preferences, so that they can develop a very customized plan for you.

In fact, our research has shown that when an investor partners with a financial advisor, they can actually generate more in net returns in their portfolio over time relative to what they might be able to do on their own.

At Vanguard, you actually get all of this highly customized investment advice as well as access to a financial advisor on an ongoing basis at just 30 basis points of your assets under management.

Personal Advisor is really for investors who are looking for more help with their investments.

I often think about what it takes to be a successful investor, and think that you should know your goals, you should have a plan to achieve those goals.

And part of that plan should be a proper asset allocation, diversified portfolio, thinking about how much you should be saving.

As you approach that goal, how much you need to spend, how to invest in the portfolio, and withdraw from the portfolio highly tax-efficiently.

And if you know how to do all those things, and have the time and confidence in your ability to do it, you probably don’t need advice.

But if you lack the time to do all of those things, or if you lack confidence in your ability to, you should consider working with an advisor.

Personal Advisor really focuses on you. Your investment goals are as specific to you as a person.

Our advisors want to get to really know you, understand your situation, understand your preferences, and really customize and create a plan around that.

First, you’ll meet with our advisors and they’ll get to know a little bit more about your situation.

They’ll create a customized financial plan and make sure it’s something that meets your needs.

As you guys agree to the plan, they’ll move to put the plan into action, get the portfolio set up, and most importantly, manage it ongoing as time changes and your situation needs to be reevaluated.

How is Vanguard Personal Advisor different than a target-date fund?

Target-date funds are great investment options for individuals, especially those that have a single goal of retirement and a pretty good handle on the date in which they hope to retire.

Where Personal Advisor is different is for clients who have multiple goals or have both taxable and tax deferred assets the advisor has an opportunity to truly customize a portfolio for your specific situation.

The other way that target-date funds are different than Personal Advisor. Well, a target date is just a fund, whereas Personal Advisor adds the human element of the advisor who’s there to help you make those other financial planning decisions, like:

  • Have you saved enough for retirement?
  • How can you spend from that portfolio in retirement?
  • Questions around Social Security and pension.

And all of those other things that come into play when you’re truly thinking about how to build a plan for your future.

Investments in target-date funds are subject to the risks of their underlying funds. The year in the fund name refers to the approximate year (the target date) when an investor in the fund would retire and leave the work force. The fund will gradually shift its emphasis from more aggressive investments to more conservative ones based on its target date. An investment in target-date funds is not guaranteed at any time, including on or after the target date.

What is it like to be a Vanguard Personal Advisor client?

A client that comes into Personal Advisor, we want to make their experience exactly that personal.

And we can do that in a lot of different ways but one of the ways I like to work with my clients, as I am an advisor here with Vanguard, is through using video conferencing.

And that is such a wonderful tool because it allows me to see the client, but more importantly, it lets the client see me.

So we can talk together and it’s like sitting across the table from each other.

We have our plan out and we’re taking it through and all of that; it really bridges that gap with the distance that sometimes is between myself and the client.

The other tool that we have that I use quite a bit is the web experience.

So when a client logs on to their website, what they see is all about them.

It’s their goals. It’s what they want. Where are they on target to their goals? We look at what their expenses are, their income.

They can see everything right there, and it’s all about their goal.

And so I try to work with them to make sure they’re looking at what we’ve put into the plan because things change and they may need to contact their advisor to let them know things have changed.

And then we can update the information and they can see it immediately right there.

When we work with our clients with Personal Advisor, as I said before, we want it to be personal.

We want it to be about them.

And we do have the tools to make that happen.
