Product summary

This fund seeks to outperform the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. The fund’s quantitative and fundamental investment approaches result in risk and sector profiles that are similar to those of its benchmark index. The fund has a total return goal, meaning that it seeks both capital appreciation and dividend income. The key risk for the fund is the volatility that comes with its full exposure to the stock market. The fund provides broad exposure to a diverse group of large U.S. companies and may be considered a primary equity holding in a portfolio.

How your fund can affect your taxes

A fund's capital gains and losses can reveal the tax implications of holding a particular fund in a taxable account. This is true of both realized and unrealized capital gains and losses.

These tax implications don't apply to investors holding a fund in a tax-deferred account, such as an IRA or employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Fund management

Vanguard Growth and Income Fund seeks a total return greater than that of the S&P 500 Index by investing in U.S. large- and mid-capitalization stocks. The fund’s three investment advisors manage independent subportfolios. Two advisors use a quantitative approach to investing and one uses a fundamental approach to select a broadly diversified group of stocks that, as a whole, have investment characteristics similar to the S&P 500 Index, but are expected to provide a higher total return than that of the index.

D. E. Shaw Investment Management, L.L.C.
The firm employs quantitative models that seek to capture predominantly “bottom-up” stock-specific return opportunities while aiming to control overall portfolio risk and characteristics, such as size, sector weights, and style, to be similar to those of the benchmark. The advisor continually seeks to enhance the diversified set of models used to identify stock pricing inefficiencies, given its belief that market inefficiencies typically are arbitraged away over time. The price forecasts generated by these models, along with estimates of various forms of risk and the costs of transacting, are considered by an optimizer in order to construct a portfolio with the highest expected risk-adjusted return, net of trading costs, relative to that of the S&P 500 Index.

D. E. Shaw Investment Management, L.L.C., New York, New York, is a privately owned investment management firm founded in 2005. The firm is a pioneer in the field of computational finance and quantitative investment strategies. The firm has advised Vanguard Growth and Income Fund since 2011.
Max Stone
Managing Director, Portfolio manager.
Advised the fund since 2025. Worked in investment management since 1994. A.B., Brown University.
Dr. Konstantin Turitsyn
Senior Vice President, Portfolio manager.
Advised the fund since 2025. Worked in investment management since 2018. B.S., Novosibirsk State University. M.Sc., Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Ph.D., L.D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Russia Academy of Science.
Los Angeles Capital Management LLC
The firm employs a quantitative model that seeks to emphasize stocks with characteristics that investors are currently seeking and to underweight stocks with characteristics that investors are currently avoiding. The firm believes these investor risk preferences change over time, so its model dynamically adapts to reflect these changes. Although the advisor aims to keep its overall portfolio characteristics similar to those of the S&P 500 Index, certain factors such as size, sector weights, and style often may differ from the S&P 500 Index in a risk-controlled manner.

Founded in 2002, Los Angeles Capital Management LLC, Los Angeles, California, is an employee-owned investment advisory firm offering risk-controlled active equity portfolio applications. The firm has advised Vanguard Growth and Income Fund since 2011.
Hal W. Reynolds
CFA, Co-Chief Investment Officer and Principal Portfolio manager.
Advised the fund since 2011. Worked in investment management since 1982. B.A., University of Virginia. M.B.A., University of Pittsburgh.
Kristin J. Ceglar
CFA, Senior portfolio manager.
Advised the fund since 2022. Worked in investment management since 2008. B.A., Harvard College.
Wellington Management Company LLP
The firm allocates assets in its portion of the fund to a team of Global Industry Analysts (GIAs) who each manage a sector portfolio, with the allocation generally aligning with that sector’s weight in the S&P 500. Each GIA employs their own philosophy & process within their sector, seeking to add value via bottom-up security selection and industry allocations. The advisor believes that covering the same companies and industries over a period of many years equips these GIAs with comprehensive insights that should help produce superior results relative to the S&P 500 Index over the long-term.

Founded in 1928, Wellington Management Company LLP, Boston, Massachusetts, is among the nation’s oldest and most respected institutional investment managers. The firm has advised Vanguard Growth and Income Fund since 2023.

Total returns: Short-term total return information is provided only as a service. Historical performance—particularly short-term performance—is no guarantee of future returns. Price, yield, and return on an actual investment will fluctuate, and you may have a gain or loss when you sell. Average annual returns include changes in price and reinvestments of dividends and capital gains. Since-inception returns for less than 1 year and year-to-date returns aren't annualized. Index performance is provided as a benchmark but isn't illustrative of any particular investment. You can't invest in an index.

Standardized returns: To see quarterly fee-adjusted returns, refer to the Price & Performance details.

Expense ratios: Expense ratios are displayed on Overview. For investments that are less than 1 fiscal year old, expense ratios are estimated.

Risk: All investing is subject to risk, including the possible loss of the money you invest. Funds that concentrate on a relatively narrow market sector face the risk of higher share-price volatility. Investments in stocks or bonds issued by non-U.S. companies are subject to risks including country/regional risk and currency risk.

An investment in the fund could lose money over short or even long periods. You should expect the fund’s share price and total return to fluctuate within a wide range, like the fluctuations of the overall stock market. The fund’s performance could be hurt by:

  • Investment style risk: The chance that returns from large-capitalization stocks will trail returns from the overall stock market. Large-cap stocks tend to go through cycles of doing better—or worse—than other segments of the stock market or the stock market in general. These periods have, in the past, lasted for as long as several years.
  • Manager risk: The chance that poor security selection will cause the fund to underperform relevant benchmarks or other funds with a similar investment objective.
  • Stock market risk: The chance that stock prices overall will decline. Stock markets tend to move in cycles, with periods of rising stock prices and periods of falling stock prices.
